Took the plunge today and added a background image to my portrait. I wonder if other artists experience this trepidation to add something like this. Of course as soon as the first brush stroke is laid, you are committed to continue on. Maybe that's why it's such a scary thing for me. There is really no going back with watercolors. Not the greatest picture again but....
Continuing on....
Hope you like it :)
Thanks for stopping by!
i always try to do backgrounds first with watercolour, but its not always possible :/

DeleteThanks Jennifer for your comments!
DeleteI wish I would have decided on a background and figured it all out before too! LOL. I had an idea what I wanted but it was nothing like the reference photo. I didn't think it would be hard to change up the background because I knew I sure didn't want the hottub in the way LOL. Oh well, I continue to learn with each and every piece I do.
I don't paint so can't comment about backgrounds with watercolour but with cps and pastel I often work on the background at the same time or after the main subject.
ReplyDeleteI think this has really benefitted from having a background as there was a bit too much plain white to the right of the dog before (IMHO) so I'd have suggested cropping it slightly. Its nicely balanced now.
Great job. Can't remember, is this a practice piece or a commission where you have to worry about pleasing a client?
Thanks Sue :)
DeleteThank goodness this is just a practice and learning piece. This is my dog. I took a photo and then completely changed the background LOL. I seem to always set my self a challenge that way but at the time, I didn't think it would be that difficult. Definitely a good learning experience for me :)
